Happy 5th Birthday HR That Helps!

This year I celebrate 5 years of HR That Helps! It’s a great time to look back over the HR issues that have been topical over the last half a decade, as well as reminiscing over some fantastic events.

As a well-qualified and established HR consultant, I have over 25 years experience in the industry working in a wide range of commercial environments. These include SME’s and large national charities, and as well as experience working in a multi-national unionised company.

When my passion for HR fueled the decision to begin my own consultancy, it also gave me the opportunity to connect with lots of different people. One way of doing this was through my blog. Through the HR Updates posted on this site through the last five years we have covered a massive variation in topics. This included HR buzzwords of the day like Shared Parental Leave, flexible workingNational Living Wage and Pension Auto Enrolment. I also covered new developments and trends such as E-cigarettes in the workplace, social media policy and Managing Mental Health and self care.

There’s also the HR topics that never go out of style! Recurring, important issues to business that I covered in the past include redundancies, Alcoholism, sick days, recruitment and grievances.

It’s been great to cover such contrasting subjects that affect all companies, whether they are small local businesses or large nationals. As always, my focus has been on working with management to reduce risk for their companies, providing the commercially aware, realistic approach they need.

Another way of connecting has been through networking groups and speaking to like-minded businesses. I have a spoken at a number events for Basingstoke Business Club, one of my long running networking groups of which I have also been Chair and Treasurer throughout the years. I have also spoken about general HR Issues for Hampshire Chamber, local business parks and with other companies such as Beaufort Asset Management. A common topic for my seminars is Essential HR for Managers, where sometimes management roles cover elements of HR, but responsibilities are not always understood. This year, the impact of GDPR was very important leading to a joint event with flavourfy covering these new regulations and their implications.

HR that Helps provides practical, commercially orientated advice on all aspects of managing people. This includes contracts of employment, dispute resolution, performance and absence management and compliance with the law.
